We have realized several refrigerated trailer pilots with European Trailer Manufacturers over the last years, which are driving across Europe and collect valuable data about Solar Yield and its impact on cooling performance and energy independence. Our High automotive Solar Modules provide free-of-charge and clean solar energy to cool the transported goods – reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), cut Diesel Costs and reduce charging time. We are collaborating on refrigerated trailer pilots together with several TRU (Transport Refrigeration Unit) manufacturers. With those, we have realized electrical interfaces between our in-house developed High Voltage Solar Charge Controllers and their electrical or hybrid powered TRUs. That means, the SonoSolar Solution for Refrigerated Trailers and Trucks is compatible with most TRUs in the market.
Since early 2025 we have collaborated in a close partnership with Merlin Solar Technologies from the US. Merlin Solar will distribute Sono’s solar charge controller technology as part of its integrated power systems in North and South America, leveraging its established network and engineering capabilities.
SonoSolar in turn, will distribute Merlin’s cutting-edge solar modules throughout Europe, ensuring access to high-efficiency PV hardware that complements its existing solutions.
We collaborate with global commercial vehicle OEMs – for example as part of the EU-funded SolarMoves project with Ford Motor Company and their Ford Pro Special Vehicles team – to explore the real-world potential of Vehicle Integrated Photovoltaics (VIPV).
Together, we’re currently testing solar integration on a Ford E-Transit, equipped with a 1 kWp Solar Installation and our High Voltage (HV) Solar Charge Controller. The controller optimizes the energy yield of each panel and converts low-voltage solar power to the high-voltage level of the vehicle’s traction battery.
We equipped several city and overland buses – electric, hybrid and diesel with our Solar Solution, all over Europe. As one of the most outstanding projects, we integrated solar on a small fleet of Diesel Overland Buses with Scania, a Volkswagen Subsidiary. These buses drive in the City of Lulea in Northern Sweden, proving the high potential, solar integration on buses even has in Northern Europe.
